Community Arts Programs

In addition to the Jerry Brown Arts Festival, the Northwest Alabama Arts Council’s continued progress and development is demonstrated in its involvement in arts-related community programs within Marion County.

CNC Museum Quilt Show

The Northwest Alabama Arts Council is a co-sponsor of the CNC Museum Quilt Show which is held annually the second weekend of April at CNC Quilt Guild Museum, 161 Bankhead Highway in downtown Winfield.

In its first year in 2009, the show displayed 128 handmade quilts ranging in age from brand new to over 150 years old. This juried show is one of the largest of its kind in North Alabama.

The Second Annual CNC Museum Quilt Show is scheduled for April 9, 10, and 11 at the museum located at 161 Bankhead Highway (next to city hall) in Winfield. There is a $3 charge for admission. Children under 12 are admitted free of charge. Antique quilts and new quilts made by area quilters and their ancestors will be on exhibit throughout the weekend. There will be a special exhibition entitled "Quilts in Shimmering Glass" by Rhys Green and Linda Munoz, which previously exhibited at the Kentuck Museum of Art on display. People's Choice Awards will be given for first place of $150, second place of $100, and third place of $50. Applications are available below or by contacting Linda Addison at (205) 495-8604. There is a nominal fee for each quilt submitted.

Buttahatchee River Fall Fest

Each year the Hamilton Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Buttahatchee River Fall Fest (BRFF) on the last Saturday in October in beautiful downtown Hamilton. In 2008, the NWAAC was approached by chamber leaders to start a “stand alone” arts and crafts section at the festival.

Very diverse in nature from the Jerry Brown Arts Festival, the BRFF is not juried and is an outdoor event, and it allows for admission into the section of craftsmen and craftswomen, the basic requirements being some portion of the items sold in the booth being handmade and being in good taste.

The agreement between the two organizations mandates all proceeds from the arts and crafts section be donated by the NWAAC to art education programs in the three Hamilton schools – Hamilton Elementary, Hamilton Middle, and Hamilton High School. Proceeds from the 2008 supported HES’ annual spring play, HMS’ Art in the Middle program, and HHS’ band and choral programs.

The 2009 BRFF is scheduled for Saturday, October 31. For more information on the Buttahatchee River Fall Fest, please visit the official BRFF website: www.hamiltonfallfest.org or call Ed or Marla Minter, co-chairpersons of the BRFF arts and crafts section. There is no charge for admission.
